Ontario Growing Guide - May!

We are blessed to call Ontario home. We have more than half the highest quality (Class 1) farmland in Canada, and an abundance of natural resources like rich soil, and over 250,000 fresh water lakes. The jingle that rings through my head “good thing growww, in Ontario!” is a true statement. Ontario’s agricultural production includes: fruit crops, such as grapes, apples, berries and other tender fruits, vegetables, cash crops, such as soybeans, corn, mixed grains, forage crops, wheat and barley. The four big produce in season during the month of May are:

  • Asparagus

  • Fiddleheads

  • Rhubarb

  • Romaine

It doesn’t get fresher than this! When produce are in season, they taste better, sweeter, more flavourful and at their peak nutrition. May we enjoy, try, and find new ways of incorporating these 4 into our home menus this month! I’m searching online for the best recipes to try with these ingredients. Recipes bookmarked include: roasted asparagus with cheese, sautéed fiddleheads with garlic butter, rhubarb compote (for topping yogurt, oatmeal, pancakes etc.), and a Greek romaine salad. Oh boy am I hungry! Cheers!
