FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
About Nutrition Counselling
Are dietitian services covered by OHIP?
Private practice Registered Dietitian services are not covered by OHIP. However, these services are eligible under many health insurance benefits. Please check with your provider to see if you or your child is covered for dietitian services, which is usually under paramedical services. Many insurance plans offer an annual dietitian coverage. We will provide an invoice for you to submit for reimbursement after payment for sessions.
We offer direct billing with some insurance companies. Please ask about it during our discovery call.
In Ontario, Registered Dietitians are classified as an “authorized medical practitioner”. Based on income level, you may qualify for a non-refundable tax credit when you file RD invoices with your taxes if you don’t have group or private health benefits.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
A doctor’s referral is not needed. Many people self-refer for themselves or their child when they see the need or have a concern.
What is the time commitment for nutrition counselling?
Depending on the nutrition concern, the time commitment will vary between 3 visits (1 initial consult, and 2 follow ups spaced a few weeks apart for milder concerns), to 4+ visits (1 initial consult, and 3 or more follow ups for more complex concerns). Ultimately, the time commitment and frequency of follow up appointments will be determined together.
What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?
Registered Dietitian (RD) is a protected professional title regulated by the College of Dietitians of Ontario. RDs are health professionals who provide expert advice on nutrition. Training required is a university degree in a Bachelor of Science degree with a Food and Nutrition specialization, along with an accredited post-university clinical training. The title Nutritionist can be used by anyone, without required minimum training, and is not a protected title. Be careful who you seek out medical nutrition advice from. For your safety, make sure it is a Registered Dietitian.
What will we discuss during the discovery call?
We will talk about the process of nutrition counselling, and discuss your or your child’s nutrition concern(s). We will discuss your health goals, and any other questions you may have before starting as a client.
How do I pay for services?
Payment can be made via e-transfer and credit card processing.
