participACTION report card

ParticipACTION released today the 2022 report card on physical activity on children and youth. In summary, things aren’t looking so good. The pandemic forced/exacerbated our families and kids into a more sedentary lifestyle. Physical activity is down, and sedentary activities like screen time is way up.

Children get the grade “D” for physical activity, and grade “F” for screen time. :( This is a depressing report, but not unexpected.

Physical activity and nutrition are the pillars to health and wellness. If one pillar is suffering, it’s hard to imagine that the other pillar is going well and strong. When we’re stuck at home, we are prone to boredom eating and emotional eating due to fears and uncertainty of the world around us. Comfort foods can easily become more prioritized or craved. These foods is often high in empty calories, fat, salt and or sugar. It can all become a vicious cycle. Processed and junk foods are so incredibly common these days, that when someone focuses on eating whole foods, they could be questioned for ‘dieting’.

Eating whole foods more than processed food is not dieting, it is self care, and it takes a long time to build in these healthy eating habits. It takes a lot of self control to say no to a tempting food. Dietitians can help you say ‘no’ easier, and help establish you back on the path to health and wellness. You are worth it.
